Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the government's $1.5-billion ocean protection plan in Vancouver for responses to tanker and fuel spills in the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
Trudeau said the funding over five years will include creating a marine safety system, restoring marine ecosystems and research into oil spill cleanup methods. He called it "the most significant investment ever made to protect our oceans and coastlines."
The announcement, made with Transport Minister Marc Garneau, comes after the minister spent Sunday touring a site on B.C.'s Central Coast where a tugboat ran aground and sank more than three weeks ago, releasing thousands of litres of diesel and lubricants into the water.
"The ongoing incident at Bella Bella is unacceptable," said Trudeau, referring to the spill. "It's time for a change."
Nigel Bennett Founder of Aqua-Guard comments:
"We are the only 100% Canadian owned company able to offer a complete range of oil skimming and containment equipment to government and industry for marine spill response in Canada's harsh conditions. Aqua-Guard's unique technology is specifically designed for use in Canada's offshore, near shore and river environments.
We have been global leaders in the design, fabrication and supply of state of the art oil spill response equipment and services since 1992, supplying to 104 countries worldwide. Nobody wants an oil spill on our coast, this is where our families call home but if such an event happens, our Canadian built, tested and certified equipment is the best suited for spill response in our harsh environments.
On November 7th, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a major step to help protect our pristine coasts. "
